The public schools in Hillsborough County were recently awarded an "A" grade by the State of Florida for excellence in education. The Hillsborough County School District is comprised of 198 public schools, all offering award-winning educational programs. Of these schools, 130 are elementary, 41 are middle, 3 are K-8 and 23 are high schools. In addition, there are 73 other centers such as Charter Schools, Magnet Schools, Early Childhood Education and ESE programs.
Charter schools are independently owned and operated institutions that offer tailor-made educational programs to suit individual students.While financially independent, Charter schools are still accountable to the district in which they reside and must adhere to district rules and policy.

Some of the more well-known private schools in this area include; Tampa Preparatory School, Berkeley Preparatory Academy, Academy at the Lakes, Academy of the Holy Names, Jesuit High School, Independent Day School, and Carrollwood Day School.
