Friends of mine are planning the purchase of their new car – one of hybrids that will save gas and be kinder to the environment. It’s a big investment for them, but it’s worth it, they tell me. They’re doing what they can to reduce their carbon footprint. I hear a lot of the same as a Realtor. Most people are concerned about our effect on the environment, and they’re looking for greener homes and greener lifestyles. Of course, I’d love to sell every one of you reading this a high efficiency, low energy home – it’s what I do, after all. But you don’t have to wait until you’re ready to make a big investment to start living a life that’s less intrusive to our planet and kinder to our environment. Here are ways to live a greener in every facet of your life.

Ten Ways to Save Water

The average family wastes thousands of gallons of water a week. Saving water is one of the easiest ways to save money and start thinking in terms of our effect on the planet.

  1. Install aerators on any faucet made before 1994.
  2. Replace worn washers in your faucets.
  3. Swap out your shower head for a low-flow shower head.
  4. Take showers instead of baths.
  5. Turn off the faucet while you brush your teeth.
  6. Don’t throw away water that you can use again – to water plants, for instance.
  7. Only run the dishwasher and washing machine when they’re full.

  8. Keep a pitcher of cold water in your fridge so you don’t waste water running it to get it cold.
  9. Use a water dam in your toilet tank.
  10. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway.
